Support Coordination vs Specialist Support Coordination: What’s the Difference?

25-06-2026 by Theo

If you are reviewing your NDIS plan, you may have come across both Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination and wondered what makes them different.

While both services help participants connect with supports and work towards their goals, Specialist Support Coordination provides a higher level of assistance for people with more complex circumstances.

What is Support Coordination?

Support Coordination helps participants understand their NDIS plan, connect with suitable providers, and build the confidence and skills needed to manage their supports over time.

A Support Coordinator may assist with:

  • Understanding your NDIS funding
  • Connecting with service providers
  • Coordinating supports
  • Preparing for plan reviews
  • Navigating challenges that arise during your NDIS journey

The focus is on helping participants make the most of their plan while building capacity and independence.

What is Specialist Support Coordination?

Specialist Support Coordination is designed for participants who have more complex support needs or challenging support environments.

This may include participants who:

  • Are experiencing crisis situations
  • Have multiple services involved in their care
  • Require support across different sectors such as health, mental health, justice, housing, or child services
  • Face significant barriers to accessing supports

A Specialist Support Coordinator works collaboratively with participants, families, carers, and external services to reduce complexity and create a coordinated approach to support.

Which Service Is Right for Me?

The level of coordination included in your NDIS plan will depend on your individual circumstances and the supports approved by the NDIA.

Some participants may only require Support Coordination, while others may benefit from the additional expertise and advocacy provided through Specialist Support Coordination.

At Sage, we take the time to understand your situation and provide the level of support that best meets your needs and goals.

If you are unsure which service is included in your plan or would like to discuss your options, our team would be happy to help.
